Marbella Club Hotel and Golf show their support for Animals
The distress of the barking dogs in the animal home AAA (Amigos-Animales-Abandonados) at Marbella is hard for anyone to listen to. The animals bite and fight for every inch in their narrow cages. So much howling is frightening. The animal home is overcrowded and money for food and maintenance are a daily challenge for the organizers. Without the assistance of volunteers the animal home would be a total disaster. The AAA organization was lucky to find recently new homes for 50 dogs in Germany. A true blessing for the dog shelter. This still left however €3000 for transportation costs. Dr. Volker Bernhardt “DrGolf” heard about the problem, and with his Golf Charity World Tour (golfcharityworldtour.com) launched a fundraising campaign, for the outstanding funds. His good friend, Rod Bastard, director of golf at Marbella Club Golf Resort, donated the green fees and buggies, so “DrGolf” could play for this special charity event.
Two main sponsors, Peter Welsch-Lehmann and Javier de Mendieta, donated the lion's share. Christa Spänhoff showed a super human effort petitioning over 100 people by personal letter and 50 via phone calls to find the outstanding amount. With the contributions of Cecil Briand, Gonzalez & Partners, June Barnes and Jane Whitworth the remaining money for the transport was guaranteed.
Dr.Golf then played at the Marbella Club Resort Golf Coursewith three generous female players: Christa Spänhoff, Cecil Briand and her friend Martine van der Zee. A scramble playing format was used for the game which Volker managed to win at the 17th hole after a very exciting game. The final hole was for the drinks and the ladies won with a great birdie in great style.
After a hard fight all the players were very hungry and gratefully enjoyed the wonderful invitation to a lunch buffet from Count Rudi von Schönburg (Conde Rudi) at the beach restaurant in the exclusive five star Marbella Club Hotel. The players were in agreement: An extraordinary day of golf and more importantly, 50 dogs found a better home and life. The tears of joy from Susanna (Triple A) during the cheque presentation inspired everyone involved to help with further projects in the future.
One thing was certain, the lucky dogs who are now in Germany have found a sheltered home and are enjoying their new life of freedom. For them the Christmas sausages will taste especially good this year.
